What is Copyright?
Copyright refers to protection granted to authors, artists and other creators for their literary and artistic creations, generally referred to as “works”. A form of intellectual property that promotes literary and artistic works from exploitation without authorization from the owner. The copyright owner has the exclusive right to prohibit or authorize the reproduction, distribution, public performance, public display, and creation or production of derivative works. Copyright protects expressions of ideas that have been created independently. That is, for a work to be protected by copyright, it should be an original creation. Copyright protection generally lasts for the life of the author/artist plus 50 years after their death. However, some jurisdictions provide for the life of the author plus 70 years.
What are Related Rights?
Related Rights cover performing artists such as actors and singers in their performances; producers of sound recordings in their recordings; and broadcasting organization in their radio and television programmes.
